Black Opal Even True Skintone Brightening Creme Review

Oh the eternal struggle for spot-free, even-toned skin! Trust me ladies, you are not alone. Whether it’s freckles, old acne marks, dark patches from pregnancy, or plain and simple sun damage, you’ve got them, they’re ugly, and you don’t want them. Trouble is, there just aren’t that many effective products out there to help you get rid of them, especially if you’re not interested in using Hydroquinone (the most effective, yet controversial skin lightening ingredient known to dermatologists).

Well, we’re looking at a contender today. It’s called Black Opal Even True Skintone Brightening Creme, and it looks as though it may hold some promise. It’s part of the Even True line from Black Opal. Black Opal is a 20 year old company dedicated to meeting the skincare needs of women of color. They provide doctor-recommended, chemist-formulated skincare products that are attainable and affordable for most women.

Black Opal Even True Skintone Brightening Creme ReviewBlack Opal Even True Skintone Brightening Creme Ingredients and How They Work

When a product forgoes hydroquinone in favor of something more safe, they usually have to sacrifice a degree of effectiveness. Black Opal Even True Skintone Brightening Creme gets around this by using an ingredient called Undecylenoyl Phenylalanine. It’s a white powdery substance made primarily of amino acids that blocks the pathways that melanin takes to darken skin. That’s the primary ingredient of note, but the formula doesn’t stop there.

Additional lightening ingredients include Citrus Extracts, Licorice Root, and Alba Flower Extract, and there are plenty of soothing, softening, and hydrating ingredients like Cocoa Butter, Shea Butter, Squalene, and Algae Extract. A few antioxidants like Vitamin E and Cucumber Extract are also thrown in for good measure.

Recommended use is in the morning after cleansing and before applying sunscreen with at least 15 SPF.

Q: For how long should I continue using a brightening scrub.l have a problem of pimples and dark spots -Edinah

A: Hi Edinah, consider giving Beauty Counter's Charcoal bar a try, it's great for detoxifying the skin and clearing up acne and it's not drying. Also for reducing dark spots, I have been using the Brightening Collection. The mask would also be fabulous for clearing out your pores and it immediately lightens and brightens the whole face. The Brightening oil is fantastic, don't be afraid of oils... they can really help. If you keep your skin too dry trying to avoid breakouts, your skin will overproduce oils and that's what clogs pores. Give it a little moisture and it won't do that.  You could also consider the Balancing Collection. If you have really oily skin I would go for this one. Rachel

Q: Where can I find it -Hope

A: Hi Hope, I'm not sure Black Opal is still on the market. A product with very similar all natural ingredients, and the one that I've used with great results is Illuminatural 6i. Thanks! Rachel
